“14 Tracks in love with the cover version”

Cover versions can often be a fantastic device for adventurous music makers to speak in a more colloquial tongue. It doesn't matter how deviant the execution is, the encounter with a familiar melody or hook will speak to even the most casual listener. This selection brings together cover versions that have served us very well over the years, some of them re-contextualising the classics (Fennesz's remarkable take on the Beach Boys' 'Don't Talk'), others shining a light on the brilliant songwriting at the heart of the original (Masha Qrella's version of Brian Ferry's Don't Stop The Dance), while others elicit a wry smile of recognition with just the right mix of humour and reverence (the Mayer/Aguayo take on Kylie's 'Slow'). Despite the familiarity so central to their very notion, cover versions are often at their best when offering an entry point into music from beyond our immediate frame of reference, providing access to that world of new music so many of us crave....

“bundling downloads”

cheers for all the comments - it really helps us prioritise upgrades and fixes. We're aware that many of you have asked for the selections to be bundled into one package for downloading purposes, just to let you know that it's on our to-do list along with other nice improvements and features - watch this space!

“Alarm Will Sound... so lovely”

I absolutely adore the Alarm Will Sound cover, I put in on one of my radio shows at the beginning of this year (see link). The accompanying album is incredibly faithful to other - lets face it - quite hardcore skittering Richard D James numbers. I think quite often covers offer little to the existing platter but this is almost a warm academic exercise. Superb.

“Sly & Robbie... the James Last of reggaedub?”

The once great Sly & Robbie have now become the James Last of reggaedub. Satanicpornocultshop did a dark and very disturbing version of Kylie Minogue's 'Can't get you out of my head' some time ago (worth to track down, surely better then the 'Slow' cover here). Best track of this selection is Andy Stott's reinterpretation of Claro Intelecto.

“shinehead”

shinehead version is cool bit also overused, i have at least a half dozen compilations with his version on. I second that comment about the Alarm Will Sound vs Aphex Twin track, it's quite exceptional. I love how they've made acoustic bass noises sound so electric. gonna get myself the album if it's all this good....
