“14 tracks feelin the dubstep hybrids”

Dubstep has divided and consolidated into distinct schools of sound, some settling into the predictable routine of halfstep templates and dub cliché, while others have forged a brilliant path through sonic innovation with an open mind to influences beyond the narrow confines of dark, smoke-filled rooms. The Dubstep/Techno love-in has captured the imagination of both sides of the divide, with seasoned dubstep heads starting to discover the world of Minimal techno, while purist clubs like Berghain have invited the likes of Shackleton and Scuba into the fold. But the cross-fertilisation extends beyond these two disciplines, elements of Drum & Bass, Hip Hop and House have also been notable influences on some of the most interesting dubstep out there, creating a multi disciplined low-end petri dish producing exciting and groundbreaking music for the next level. This selection offers a snapshot of just some of these composite sounds, a mixture of out-and-out scene classics and more obscure concoctions from the fringe.

“Burial..”

The remix of Crackle Blues by Burial is beautiful! If people don't know about him already, check his album 'Untrue'.

“FLAC anyone?”

We all had this pricing argument earlier on. How 'bout a Flac version of the same package of 14 tracks?

“hear hear on the flac!”

any chance of this happening? mp3 is just so, like, yesterday.

“OK, but...”

how about some GOOD dubstep next time instead of all this minimal 4/4 rubbish? ;) The Villalobos has to be one of the most horrific abominations in a long time. Bah. The Burial remix is quite nice, despite sounding like everything else he's done of late.

“Overall is a nice selection despite...”

The title of this selection should have been Dubstep hybrid instead of the plural meaning, it lacks some other dubstep influenced rhythms that makes the definition so much of a wide range genre nowadays, this installment could have been much greater and pleasant than just some dubbed out, deep and 4\4 patterns, obviously that doesn't means that there's not some amazing selections throughout. The title is promising but not the selection overall.

“suggestions”

Hey Peter, Rodrigo, cheers for the comments. would be cool to hear some suggestions about what you'd have liked to have seen included, or generally what you're into on this tip.

“Iove hibrids”

I think that the dubstep hibrids are much more interesting than the traditional ones, i really like the 4/4 ones too. Im hearing the Deadbeat track and its awsome.. Brilliant 14tracks..

Hey Shlom, your introduction's quite good and explains how the dubstep scene's going nowadays on but there's definitely a certain focus for that techno-dubstep bridge, one of the most prominent hybrids in those days, here's some suggestions... Matty G, RSD, Mala or L-Wiz for the dub reggae influenced dubstep, Kromestar for some grimey moments, Dusk & Blackdown's last tune from their latest full length, titled Focus, is amazing if you want to introduce people for that Detroit techno approach full of melodic grooves. Quest or Silkie for some deep soulful vibes, Skream or Benga for some techy action or Coki , Rusko or Caspa for those wobblers moments. Geiom or Pinch with those brilliant vocal numbers or even a bit of Sub Swara with that marvellous Belgrade Riddim, perfect for those balkan beats lovers or a bit of Darkstar or Plastician those whose digs asiatic melodies, there are also so many names producing some experimental and innovative stuff like Rustie, iTAL tEK, Alien Pimp or UltraBlack to name but a few that deserved a reference within the dubstep genre. This is from the top of my head so thats why i thought that you people there didn't diversified as much as possible and as much your description does, you had bet in 3 productions from the same guy - Huisman - instead of introducing some other names in the scene and that said it sounds repetitive, just for the record i really likes 2562's music though, there are lot of good music with so many influences that's such a harsh task to choose 14 diverse tunes but it's quite possible i said. And there's so many good Skull Disco's tunes out there, this Villalobos remix sounds rubbish when it comes to get into comparison with the original releases, so many great mid-eastern influenced with that brilliant percussion from the guys themselves, further that its not difficult to choose a better version than this one.

“Rodrigo”

Sorry Rodrigo but those suggestions are mostly exactly the kind of dubstep that bores me. You're saying that Matt G, Rusko or L-Wiz have anything more interesting to say than Martyn, Surgeon or Peverelist? and hasn't Rustie already been bigged up on boomkat and 14tracks nufftimes? Think the selection is spot on.

“excellent”

great selection... my only problem with it is that own most of them already to the price break on the package doesn't work out for me! everyone into this sound needs to listen to peverelist's mix for the resident advisor podcast a while back. an essential recording for fans of the techno-dubstep movement.

On 17 Sep 19:06 Rodrigo said:

I didn't said that some of these artists have anything more interesting than those selected, i was giving some hints for a more diversified compilation, being better or worst is always a bit of a subjective matter don't you think? The question here is... they produce stuff in another tip within the dubstep definition, so said that we're covering another hybrid like some of those that was described in the introduction. What's boring for you it isn't boring for me and vice versa, while selecting 14 tracks to some other people listen for we have to pay attention is that we can't think only in our preferences.

“M m m Music”

first of all 14 track is such a good concept! personally i'm really into the mega deep aspects to all these tracks. Artists like Sick Rebel or Quark & Ruckspin would have worked well, and i've always found Slew as a good alternative to the 2-step Burial sound. Would be nice to see some really techy, cyber-lazer bass stuff going on. Stuff by Nagual Sound Experiment, iTAL tEK or Screenager would show the more abrasive side of the genre.

“Buying 2 collections at once?”

Just tried to buy this and another 14 tracks selection at the same time – and while the discounts for both selections were applied here (totalling £13.72), but when I was moved to the Boomkat site to check out, my order price jumped to around £19! Normally wouldn't be a big deal (just buy them both separately), but buying overseas stuff on an Australian credit card means I get charged a small fee each time...

“Hi Pat”

i think the issue you've had is to do with a territorial restriction with one of the earlier selections, i'll email you with details.

“Sorry for the negativity :/”

I just happen to be allergic to 4/4 stuff most of the time, and I find it so boring compared to the wonderful dubstep sound, so I get annoyed at Boomkat's frequent pillorying of the "mainstream" dubstep sound in favour of this techno hybrid thing. As Rodrigo said, there was the implication that there'd be more than just, basically, techno/house-style dubsteppy stuff. To me, that stuff's not innovative or fresh, but of course it comes down to taste... I'll second (third) the iTAL tEK shoutout, and there's a lot of breakcore artists enjoying the dubstep sound at the moment (Ebola, Cardopusher etc). And Funckarma's latest "Dubstoned" EPs are dub/dubstep-influenced idm - admittedly the 2nd one is still forthcoming on Ad Noiseam, and seems better than the first. I wish I had more suggestions, but I love that boring old half-step, dubby groove, with heavy bass and fractured off-beat beats, and find minimal techno as tedious this time round as it was the first time. That said, I regret being rude above :( You chaps are doing wonders for promoting interesting music, and 14tracks is a fab initiative!

Shlon, you requested suggestions....I love the 14tracks concept, and I've bought a few full sets. But, I'm dying to see you guys make a good Eurocrunk set. Are you guys up for the challenge? If so, I'll be the first to buy those 14 tracks.
