“14 tracks: Visions of the Future”

From the Afrofuturism of Sun Ra to Italy's 'Musica Futurista' movement, from the science fiction obsessions of the 1950's to the synthesiser-led New Wave of the 1970's, our musical archives are full of weird, daring, funny and often heart-warming evocations of the future, restricted only by a strict aesthetic determination to reject convention and keep looking forward. Many of the characters in this weeks selection lived their lives as outsiders - Moondog spent 20 years wondering the streets of New York inventing scores of musical instruments, developing a detailed cosmology and recording some astonishing music in the process. Remarkably, he was also blind. Sun Ra was convinced he was part of the "Angel Race" visiting earth from Saturn, while Marcel Duchamp dedicated his life to subverting accepted notions with controversial artistic statements, most famously his 'fountain' urinal. Other artists embraced the unknown sounds of tomorrow with noises made by instruments like the Theremin and the earliest Synthesisers, while radio and television transformed everyday objects into badly disguised visions of the impossibly distant 21st century; witness not only re-appropriated bathroom plungers but also the 'pots and pans' behind some of the percussive sounds featured here. Despite wildly different musical contexts, from many different parts of the world and spanning several decades, these 14 tracks somehow share an engrossing vision of the future that now strangely and wonderfully encapsulates the sounds of a bygone age.
