“14 tracks in love with Mali”

Over the last few years we've developed an obsession with half a dozen or so Malian albums that have charmed and beguiled us into submission. These include Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate's magical "In the Heart of the Moon", Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba's award winning "Segu Blue" and the amazing 'Belle Epoque' series of releases compiling the work of Mali's long-running Rail Band. The guitar and Kora playing at the heart of much of this music joins the dots between various forms of African Pop music and a deep kind of Blues that has drawn the interest of a stream of notable western artists ranging from Damon Albarn and his exceptional "Mali Music" set for Honest Jon's to Bjork's more recent collaborations with Toumani Diabate, providing the standout tracks on her last album "Volta". This selection here includes pieces from the aforementioned albums, as well as tracks from the likes of Zoumana Diarra, Boubacar Traoré and Orchestre Regional De Kayes, and steers away from the dusty clichés so often associated with African music, instead offering a window into a world of indescribable vibrancy and beauty.

Take part! Leave a comment!

What do you think of this selection?
Any suggestions?
All comments are warmly welcomed.

“Excellent”

Excellent choice--there are mountains of Africa stuff waiting to be discovered. If anyone likes the Rail band tracks I also recommend "Armee Mali," "Koro Koni," "Dioula" and "Tiramakan." 14 Tracks could also do a Congolese Rumba selection or a Franco selection--this music in a lot of ways lays waste to most non-African music.

“Whatever happened to "Your Suggestions"?”

Hey guys, whatever happened to the "Your Suggestions" feature? For more than two months now there's been a #1 voted suggestion (14 Tracks of African Highlife), the 14th of the month has come and gone (twice) and you've done nothing with these more than 50 suggestions offered up. What gives?

“Stunning...”

Just when I think I'm starting to get a grip on what makes beautiful music "beautiful", a selection like this comes along. Time after time 14 tracks has blown my mind, but for me, this is the most revelatory selection since 14 tracks contemplating the raga. Hats off to you guys, really. I just can't get enough.
