“Rustie, Something In The Bucky (Does Not Compute)”

We love Rustie. He's a singular character bridging the gap between slack hip hop, wonky, aqua-crunk, booty, electro, shuffling bump tunes and lazer/purple whatever you wanna call it. Unlike many of his contemporaries he always manages to keep it fresh, never straying into lackadaisical, blunted territory, always looking for the next sonic thrill. To celebrate the release of his epic new EP 'Bad Science' we thought it about time we took stock of his small but perfectly formed catalogue and have put together this hour-long musical headcrush, a selection that will no doubt put the fear of life into any producers who cross its path. What can we say, the boy dun good.....

Take part! Leave a comment!

What do you think of this selection?
Any suggestions?
All comments are warmly welcomed.

hmmm.. ive always thought his music suffers a bit from the 'cat on the piano/drum machine' complex.. for the ADD generation i guess.

“One level: LOUD”

Kinda with Jason (above) on this. I've test driven a lot this sort of music (without buying), and while it does what it does with conviction, there is something to be said for having a little nuance in music, a little contrast - some shade, some light. This whole wonky/grime whatever you want to call it seems to do everything at one intensity level, and after a while it's like a jackhammer on the ears.

ok, so you dont like wonky/grime/whatever, so this ain't for you. but as far as this sort of thing goes, i find Rustie so much more interesting than coffee table merchants (and there are so many out there, not mentioning any names) that sell themselves on somehow being 'innovative' when in fact its just all dull after-hours w*nkery. At least Rustie, Zomby, L-VIS 1990 and the like aren't resting on their laurels. besides, i dont buy the whole 'some shade / some light' argument, for one you can apply that to pretty much half of all producers in the underground scene (you gonna criticise ikeda for lacking in contrast?) and second, have you heard the melodies in that first track above? peace out.

Relax dude, it's only music. No big whoop.

“test driving”

to the guy above, this music ain't for test driving, it's for listening to loud. In clubs.

“Boring Old Farts Unite”

Clubs real loud, no test driving, no coffee tables - got it! I guess for us boring old farts who turned the corner on 40, let alone 30, some time ago (and therefore don't go to loud clubs anymore), that explains a few things. Long live Alva Noto!

“Overrated”

Well I'm not old and like my music loud but I don't rate Rustie too highly. It's trying to be experimental but doesn't pull it off with slickness like Flying Lotus. The wet textures are more for effect and lack the warmth of something like Drexciya. The energy just comes from the volume of the sound, it's hardly a compositional riot like Soundmurderer. Plus 8-bit samples are used more now than in the 80s. Personally I think it's overrated, I'll keep listening though just in case it clicks with me.

On 31 Aug 19:50 M said:

“James you're an idiot”

to say Rustie is overrated is absolutely ludicrous. Stop listening and start hearing...

On 01 Sep 10:45 James said:

“M is an idiot”

Your attempt at parrot philosophy has failed. You surely mean I should listen to Rustie instead of hearing Rustie. Listening is to observe whereas hearing is the function of sound going into the ear the brain decoding it. I hear Rusite but it is listening to him that makes me THINK he is overrated. Perhaps those James Stinson ripped off wet noises have addled your brain?

“It's club music”

James, your context of reference, is squewiff, I'd prefer Flying lotus sitting on my ass in house too.
