With a resolutely intransigent aesthetic rooted in the experimental arts and heavily influenced by the Industrial music of groups like Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten, Mika Vainio has over the last two decades provided the world with some of its most brilliantly visceral and experimental music. Few other artists have accomplished such a range of forms and styles, and fewer still have executed them with such a concrete character and idiosyncratic touch. As half of the legendary Pan Sonic group with Ilpo Vasainen he redefined power electronics in the wake of the 80's industrial pioneers, while veering off on solo tangents of enchanted ambient abstraction and stringently reduced techno, seeing Chicago and Detroit functions through a frosted lens of physical Finnish stoicism. Like the most obstinate geniuses, Mika encountered a problem and manufactured his own solution, with help from longtime collaborator Jari Lehtinen creating an array of custom built synthesizers and drum machines altered to his very precise specification. And it's this unbending will and ability to manipulate sounds from their sources that's seen his talent in such huge demand from the world's finest experimental bands and producers, from Sunn 0))) to Alan Vega and Merzbow, solidifying his status as a visionary virtuoso of immeasurable value.
