The name Redshape has become synonymous with a brand of highly refined and cinematic Detroit techno ever since the release of his 'Shaped World' 12" on Delsin in 2006. There have been numerous rumours surrounding this enigmatic producer in the red mask: is he a former KGB agent with a love for Detroit techno? Was his face disfigured in an overloaded-909 incident? Is it Moby in disguise? Hopefully those questions will never be answered and we'll all be left guessing until he comes out in Q magazine around 2034. Until then we have a beautiful body of work to get lost in, making a classically executed return to the sci-fi infused techno soul of Detroit music like Carl Craig's 'Landcruising', the elegant luxury of John Beltran or the electronic abstraction of the Black Dog. Redshape is the latest in a tradition of torchbearers stretching from Juan Atkins via UR and Basic Channel to stand for something unspoken, closely guarded and mystical in the world of techno, a spirit that has largely been lost in translation over the last three decades.
